Experiments throughout history to make nature more 'efficient' may not always work but in the case of early hydroseeding trials in the United States during the 1950's the first 'Hydroseeder' was a resounding success.
The first commercial hydroseeder was invented to efficiently shoot seed & fertiliser over broad areas. This process is now used throughout the world.
Hydroseeding (or hydro-mulching) is a planting process which utilises a slurry of seed & mulch. The slurry is transported in a tank, either truck or trailer mounted & sprayed over prepared ground in a uniform layer.
Helicopters may be used in cases where larger areas must be covered. Aircraft application may also be used on burnt wilderness areas after a fire, & in such uses may contain a soil stabiliser only to avoid introducing non-native plant species.
Hydroseeding is an alternative to the traditional process of broadcasting or sowing dry seed.
It promotes quick germination & inhibits soil erosion.
The mulch in the hydroseed mixture helps maintain the moisture level of the seedlings.
The slurry often has other ingredients including fertilizer, tackifying agents, green or blue dye & other additives.
Hydroseeding is used to seed grass on commercial sites, highways or motorways, parks & golf courses, heavily damaged or burnt land, lawns & areas too large, inaccessible or unsuitable for conventional methods.
Once it is applied to the soil, it enhances growth by providing an ideal environment for seed germination.
Starting a lawn by hydroseeding is considerably cheaper than laying sod/turf & quicker than using seed.
It is also used to spread mixtures of wildflower & tree/shrub seeds or turf grasses for erosion control.
This is called sprigging (or hydrosprigging) when the slurry contains stolons or rhizomes instead of seed.
Water$ave HY Hydro is a blend of Water$ave & Flobind that can be efficiently applied for hydroseeding operations in mountainous areas or road embankments. Flobind maximises plant establishment & holds the components together preventing loss of material through wind & water erosion.
Water$ave HY Hydro prevents cellulose mulch from becoming hardpan during a dry spell. The mulch remains aerated allowing the seeds to sprout quickly. Water$ave HY also reduces the amount of mulch needed.
Water$ave HY Hydro's main benefits include:
- Enhances plant seeding, growth & survival.
- Increase the water holding capacity of soils.
- Reduce watering frequency by up to 50%.
- Protect the environment against drought & groundwater pollution.
- Improve physical properties of compact soil.
- Reduce water evaporation from soil.
- Limit leaching of nutrients & fertilizers.
- Improves soil porosity & aeration that stimulates plant growth.
- Non toxic, environmentally friendly & biodegradable.
Polymer Innovations Water$ave HY Hydro is highly effective in the young regrowth of trees, shrubs, bushes & saplings to assist in revegetation & reforestation.
Water$ave HY application information:
- 1 to 2 kg of fine textured Water$ave HY per cubic metre of water along with mulching materials, fixing agents, seeds & fertilizers.
- Depending upon water retention desired, soil retention desired, soil type and salt content of the water, one hectare of hydro seed will only require 10-20kg of polymer.
- Water$ave HY must be added last to the hydro seeder tank after the other components.
- Stir at least 15 minutes before spreading.
- Water$ave HY is available in easy to use 20kg pails.
Water$ave HY will reduce the time it takes the native vegetation to reclaim it's environment.
Our Water$ave HY Hydro range is not currently available online, yet.
