Polymer Innovations In Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding is a land reclamation process often used on cleared, steep or damaged land that uses a slurry of seeds, dyes & mulch.

The slurry is transported & applied via a water tank or IBC then sprayed over the ground in a uniform layer to promote the new growth of native plants preventing air pollution, soil erosion & undue water runoff.

Warter$ave Hydro is a specific combination of polymers that are further enhanced via cross-linking to hold the hydromulch in place & release water as it is required. Water$ave Hydro is smooth & accurate to apply with no 'splashing'.

Additives such as native seeds, fertilisers or dyes can be added to the hydromulch mix depending on your soil structure, slope gradient & irrigation requirements.
Accurate smooth application
Water$ave Hydro is a specific polymer blend for general hydroseeding operations in urban areas & general road embankments.

Water$ave Hydro is designed to break down as the plants' root systems penetrate & hold the moist soil structures in place.

Water$ave Hydro provides an cost efficective, safe & easy to apply hydroseeding solution to enhance the growth of cleared or damaged native land.

Water$ave Hydro is available in 2.5kg bags, 5kg, 10kg, 15kg & 18kg pails.

Polymer Innovations has been trialing a new 'stand-alone' Polyacymalide tackifier for some time now to give greater asssitance to Australia hydroseeding projects.

A tackifier is an adhesive compound used in hydroseeding (or hydromulching). Acting as a 'glue' it can be a resin based or a polymer based mixture used to increase the 'tack' or stickiness of the hydroseed mulch to be mixed, this may contain water, seeds & fertilisers. This hydromulch 'mix' is then pumped over the area to be treated.

Water$ave Hydro-Tac is a specific linear polyacrylamide, called PAM.
Using PAM tackifiers is one best ways to hydroseed; retaining more moisture in the mulch to keep it in place & prevents messy applications without 'splashing' onto embankments, paths & roadways.

Water$ave Hydro-Tac does not 'glue' the mulch to the soil. It actually hydrates & conglomerates the soil particles, making them bigger & heavier.
Hydro-Tac is a 'stand alone' tackifier
Therefore making it much more difficult to displace on embankments, damaged land & hillsides making it perfect for steep slopes.

'Organic' tackifiers such as guar gum will 'tack' only for a short time (usually before the roots & soil have established properly) & do not retain water at all therefore not all seeds will germinate & develop evenly, leading to further soil erosion.

Water$ave Hydro-Tac is a specific polyacrylamide (or PAM) tackifier that last longer & at lower application rates produce the same 'tack' as organic tackifiers.

Water$ave Hydro-Tac is a 'stand alone' tackifier that does not necessarily require mulch or additives. It is a blend of specific lineal polyacrylamides for hydroseeding projects that retain moisture & soil structures for longer time periods than other polymer tackifiers.

Water$ave Hydro-Tac is an excellent 'straw tackifier' that is designed to break down as the plants' root systems penetrate & hold the soil structures in place.

Highly effective in the young regrowth of trees, shrubs, bushes & saplings to assist in revegetation & reforestation especially in dry & remote locations.

Water$ave Hydro-Tac is available in 2.5kg bags, 5kg, 10kg, 15kg & 18kg pails.

Water$ave Hydro & Water$ave Hydro-Tac's key benefits include:
  •     'Stand alone' tackifier, less water & no mulch required.
  •     Less required for the same amount of 'tack'.
  •     Enhances plant seeding, growth & survival.
  •     Increase the water holding capacity of soils.

Recent Dam Seal Testimonials 2011 - Part 2

We believe our Water$ave PL Plug & Seep Range is the best polymer based dam sealant in the world but making a claim like that does not sell the product alone especially when the pitch is coming from us!
Easy DIY Application

People need to hear it first hand from someone who has used our product & found that it works exactly as we design.
Water$ave PL enjoys a very high success rate on first applications... that's a lot of success stories!

Because of this fact many provide feedback of their own volition via email or comments on our website.

A lot of this feedback contributes to our Dam Sealant Testimonials page on the website.
In 2011 the testimonial section has received many new testimonial entries which we would like to share with you here...
  • Katrina Parkes on the 16th of May sent us this feedback:
Hi Guys,
Just wanted to let you know that I finally put the Water$ave Plug in my dam last Thursday.

The next day the water flowing out from the base of the wall had stopped, the day after that the creek lower down had dried up, and today the water level in the dam has increased by 20mm!

It's a miracle that will really make a difference to our lives here, we are so very happy.
Your product is fantastic and I'll certainly be telling anyone who'll listen!
Thanks again,
Regards, Katrina Parkes
  • Michael Wilson sent us a short note of thanks on the13th January:
I used your product recently to seal a dam & the results were astoundingly good.
I am very impressed with this product.
Michael Wilson
  • Sharon & Dave Adams were very happy with our sales rep Peter on the 6th July:

  • Chris at Rowe Trading was amazed on the 24th July by our Water$ave Plug Range:
Hello,
After waiting months for my dams to fill I finally spread the Water$ave last weekend, the only drama was cleaning the spillage from the bottom of the boat after.
Thank goodness for water blasters!

One week later & the area below the dam walls which normally were 25ml deep with seepage are dry.
The results are AMAZING !!!!

Cheers,

  • John Whatson had to let our salesman Brett Know about his success on 3rd August:
Good Morning Brett,
I have completed treating my dam at my Creewah property & it looks pretty successful.
I started about six weeks ago as it was slowly filling & for the first time in many years it has held.
I have spoken to the earthmoving contractor who sunk the dam for me & recommended your product to him.

I have used up the three 18kg pails that you forwarded .
I will be watching to see if I need another drum as the dam still has about 400 mm to fill before it reaches the overflow.
The contractor is:

  • A very lighthearted approach was taken by the 'The Intermittent' newspaper at Burra on the 1st of  April:

Burra is a subdivision outside Queanbeyan where we had a look at leaking dams whilst we were there.

  • Martin Chadwick submit his testimonial through the website recently on the 4th November:
My dam is forty years old & the guy who made it said it has always leaked.
Dam is now full of water lilies & looks a treat.
The treatment worked brilliantly!
Compare $370 against excavator & lining the dam, not to mention the damage to the lilies & wildlife.

The product is absolutely fantastic.

Sealing Toowoomba's Japanese Gardens

Last year Polymer Innovations was approached by Toowoomba University to seal leaks that have been experienced in the man made lakes & ponds at Toowoomba's Japanese gardens.

We were honoured to successfully bid for this project & soon organised ourselves with the help of our Queensland dam seal agents to treat & seal these beautiful waterways at Toowoomba in December 2010.

Unfortunately, this project was completed before the tragedy that was the Queensland floods which destroyed much of Queensland's South East region including Toowoomba, the nearby Lockyer Valley & Brisbane.

Toowoomba Floods January 2011.
Despite Toowoomba being 690m above see level it was completely destroyed by a massive wall of water killing 9 people in Toowoomba alone.

We were planning to publish this post earlier this year but then the floods hit South East Queensland in January.
Then cyclone Yasi hit North East Queensland in February & then the Japanese earthquake hit in March.

We did not want to appear like we were cashing in on any kind of publicity from these tragedies, so we waited...

Recently we rang the Toowoomba University & amazingly the campus reports that the floods have not destroyed the Japanese gardens. Our sealing treatments have not been compromised at all & in fact are working as designed!

After receiving this great news we thought now would be the best time to share with you the productive work we did before all of the devastation.

Two large ponds in particular were treated with very special attention to the safety of the flora & fauna in these majestic gardens such as ducks, frogs, carps & cherry blossoms, etc.

Toowoomba's Japanese Gardens December 2010.
Two key reasons why we won this project was because all of our polymers are manufactured at the highest quality standards & are 100% non toxic & biodegradable.

The second key reason is our ability to treat sandy or silty soil bases that are otherwise untreatable with Water$ave PL Plug alone or by our competitors.

Instead, these types of soils are treated with our other dam sealing polymer Water$ave PL Seep with further treatment also with Water$ave Flobind.
Use Water$ave Seep
for Porous Soil Types.
  • Water$ave PL Seep specifically designed for dams, ponds or canals that contain fine porous soil types that contain any cracks & crevices narrower than 4mm.
Seep hydrates & expands up to 200 times it's particle size.
Seep is perfect for porous, fine, sandy or silty soils, basalts, clays & volcanic soils.
  • Water$ave Flobind is a slimey polymer that is extremely versatile & assists with all water & pollution issues.
It is a water soluble polymer specifically designed to control soil erosion & improve water infiltration.
It flocculates suspended fine soil particles & stabilises existing soil structure.
Flobind is ideal for smaller applications where powder or emulsion dosing systems are not practical.
Click Here to view these treatments of the Toowoomba Japanese Gardens.

Water$ave Seep & Flobind application to the Japanese Garden's took 3 days to complete.
  • Day 1: Treatment of the base of the two main ponds by applying Water$ave Seep over water surface from a  small boat, at a rate of 100gm/m2.
  • Day 2: Treatment of the rockeries & shorelines of the two main ponds by applying Water$ave Seep, at a rate of 100gm/m2.
  • Day3: Final treatment of 4kg of Flobind to finalise the treatment of the silty & sandy base of the ponds.
Flobind being a slimey polymer can be applied via hose from an IBC to the water surface.
Polymer Innovations would like take this opportunity to wish the survivors of the recent floods & earthquakes in Toowoomba & Japan the very best in their recovery from these recent natural disasters.
If there is anything we can do to assist please let us know.

This post is in your honour. P)

A fine day with little to no wind or rain & a small boat if you have a large dam.

A pair of gloves, sunglasses, hat & wet weather gear is recommended depending on local conditions & maybe a friend to help or just watch you do it & take photos!

Do it yourself is great if the product works & operates as it is designed to do.
It needs to be a product that will work the first time, most of the time & not cost you extra stress or heartbreak from a failed DIY project.

Water$ave Plug & Seep enjoy a very high success rate of do it yourself polymer dam sealing.

Our testimonials are an excellent indication to others of the effectiveness of this premium world class polymer product.
Click here to read do it yourself Water$ave PL Plug testimonials.

If you have a leaking dam or pond & need to seal it.
Below is a step by step guide of what to consider when applying Water$ave Plug or Seep.

How To Apply Water$ave Plug or Seep

        • If your dam has water in it & is currently leaking then now would be the best time to apply.
The pressure of the water leakage creates the suction needed to draw the hydrating polymers into the problem areas & seal the leaks.
        • If you do not have any water in your dam yet.
You can apply Water$ave Plug/Seep as your dam is filling up after rain, this ensures a neat & even coverage.
        • If you know where the leak is then you can concentrate your application to that area.
It is also recommended that the rest of the dam be treated as well & this can be done when the dam is full or is at least above the problem area.
        • For a fast leak. Apply at 100gm/m2 .
A fast leak is a noticeable reduction over days & weeks.

        • For a slow leak. Apply at 75gm/m2.
A slow leak is a noticeable reduction over months.

        • Remove any deep silt, livestock & dense reeds.
They can impede the polymers ability to get to the outflows.
        • Just sprinkle over the surface of the water.
On a quiet day with no wind or rain & when the dam is not overflowing.
        • Distribute it as if you are 'feeding the chickens'.
          At the recommended rates.

        • Cast out gently no more than 1.5m.
By hand, scoop or fertiliser spreader from a small dinghy for best results.

        • Be careful not to separate the blend.
Or go through the polymer while applying to the water surface.

        • A boat is recommended.
To make sure that the application is spread evenly all over the dam without separating the blend.
        • Allow 12 - 48hrs.
To hydrate, expand & sink towards the outflows.

        • Then allow 2 - 10 days.Depending on the rate of leak for the polymers to start incorporating into the soil structures.

So far in 2011 the testimonial section has received a number of new testimonial entries which we would like to share with you here...

Including two we received in the mail this morning!
"Lachlan, Your product appears to be working – the wet patches and boggy areas behind the dam have all dried up and water level holding.
Thank you for your help and advice, I will certainly recommend
you and your product to anyone with a similar problem. Thanking you, regards Dave"
          • The second one received today is from Ken Blanch:
To Brett, You will be pleased to know the finer grain dam plug you sent me worked a treat.
I am really impressed. I have never seen the dam so full & stay full.

The bloody thing has leaked like it had a plug hole in it for 11 years & now I can plan my gardens because I know I have plenty of water. Thank you for your good advice and help.
I will send you some photos. Ken.
"Just thought that you would like to know that the leaking dam that I contacted you about has stopped leaking after using your polymer product. $365 well spent. Thanks."
          • Peter Winkler on the South Coast of NSW also contacted us recently with glowing feedback:
"Hello Polymer Innovations, I want to write to say that your product for fixing leaking dams works brilliantly. I must say I was skeptical about this polymer stuff.
But we now have a dam that is not leaking at all and about to overflow with the rain we’re getting on the South Coast of NSW.Thanks very much. It’s great to have bought a product that simply does what it is advertised to do. Regards,
G'Day Polymer Innovations, Here are photos of our Full Dam after using Water$ave Plug, very happy with the results.  Not sure if it has sealed it 100%, but it has noticeably slowed the leak.
And still have 1/2 a pail left for further treatment!
          Thank you,Kind Regards,

Dear Brett,We were very happy with the level of customer service offered by your company; we had complete confidence in the measurements given for the surface area to be treated and the method of casting the product over the dam surface. I was a little worried about the many frogs in our dam, however, I managed to retrieve and wash the few that got stuck in the gel and I am happy to report that there appears to be no diminution in the multitudinous calls of courting frogs.
We are indeed very happy with the results, especially as this is the first time in fourteen years that we have faced the bushfire season with a full dam.
Please feel free to use my comments as a genuine testimonial for your potential clients.
          Best wishes,
          • They updated us shortly after on the 15th:
Dear Polymer Innovations, A very happy update re our previously leaking, but now full dam; after seeding with the recommended polymer product, efficiently delivered to our door by courier, the dam has maintained its full level since January.
Despite past heavy rains, the dam always dropped from full by a metre over a couple of weeks.
Since using the Water$ave plug, it has retained its full level.

We are elated by the success of this product and wish you every success in a your very exciting venture. Best wishes,

          Dam Sealing Local Support Network

Polymer Innovations for a number of years has evolved into the first choice for polymer dam sealing nationwide.

Our Water$ave Plug range caters to all soil types & dam conditions either existing or to be built.

Sometimes, site visits are required that tie up resources at Singleton or become to expensive for us to get to, especially interstate.

Gradually a network is developing where people on the ground have seen what Water$ave Plug can do & have expressed interest in assisting us at the grass roots level for retail, site visits, dam consultation & dam construction.

          Coopers in South Australia
In NSW, we handle most on site projects but agents like Frank Phillips in Western Australia are able to represent our experience with dam sealing on a personal local level.

Retailers in New South Wales & South Australia stock Water$ave Plug & Seep.
In NSW, Hazell's at Tamworth, Cobargo Co-Op at Cobargo on the south coast of NSW & Greens at Mandurama near Bathurst.
In South Australia, Coopers Of Mt Torrens happily stock our dam sealing products too.

Dam construction with our products in mind are supported in NSW by Bob & Rod Lund Excavators at Meadow Flat in the central west & also JLR Excavators at High Range near Moss Vale.

Cobargo Co-Op in New South Wales
Polymer Innovations is proud & humbled to be represented in such a supportive way & who obviously back our products.
They know like many of our happy customers, that our dam sealant is the best solution to save money & water for people everyday.

We take this opportunity to thank you for your support in the past & look forward to more success in the future.
We will increase this local support network that is not yet represented in Victoria & other areas such as New Zealand.
Also, increased retail representation in a 'chain store' or franchise structure could be considered in the future too.

If you live in these areas & know of people that need to save their land water please consider us or our representatives in the future.

Australia’s water conditions are often extreme & unpredictable; it is after all ‘the land of drought & flooding rains’.
The perfect testing ground for the world’s best dam sealing product & support network.

          Water$ave HY Hydro

In the modern age we are sometimes to impatient to wait for mother nature & father time to do things in their own way. Sometimes to catch up with our often increasing rate of damage is to increase the rate of the recovery.

Experiments throughout history to make nature more 'efficient' may not always work but in the case of early hydroseeding trials in the United States during the 1950's the first 'Hydroseeder' was a resounding success.

The first commercial hydroseeder was invented to efficiently shoot seed & fertiliser over broad areas. This process is now used throughout the world.

Hydroseeding (or hydro-mulching) is a planting process which utilises a slurry of seed & mulch. The slurry is transported in a tank, either truck or trailer mounted & sprayed over prepared ground in a uniform layer.
Helicopters may be used in cases where larger areas must be covered. Aircraft application may also be used on burnt wilderness areas after a fire, & in such uses may contain a soil stabiliser only to avoid introducing non-native plant species.

Hydroseeding is an alternative to the traditional process of broadcasting or sowing dry seed.
It promotes quick germination & inhibits soil erosion.

The mulch in the hydroseed mixture helps maintain the moisture level of the seedlings.
The slurry often has other ingredients including fertilizer, tackifying agents, green or blue dye & other additives.

Hydroseeding is used to seed grass on commercial sites, highways or motorways, parks & golf courses, heavily damaged or burnt land, lawns & areas too large, inaccessible or unsuitable for conventional methods.

Once it is applied to the soil, it enhances growth by providing an ideal environment for seed germination.

Starting a lawn by hydroseeding is considerably cheaper than laying sod/turf & quicker than using seed.
It is also used to spread mixtures of wildflower & tree/shrub seeds or turf grasses for erosion control.
This is called sprigging (or hydrosprigging) when the slurry contains stolons or rhizomes instead of seed.

Water$ave HY Hydro is a blend of Water$ave & Flobind that can be efficiently applied for hydroseeding operations in mountainous areas or road embankments. Flobind maximises plant establishment & holds the components together preventing loss of material through wind & water erosion.

Water$ave HY Hydro prevents cellulose mulch from becoming hardpan during a dry spell. The mulch remains aerated allowing the seeds to sprout quickly. Water$ave HY also reduces the amount of mulch needed.

Water$ave HY Hydro's main benefits include:
          • Enhances plant seeding, growth & survival.
          • Increase the water holding capacity of soils.
          • Reduce watering frequency by up to 50%.
          • Protect the environment against drought & groundwater pollution.
          • Improve physical properties of compact soil.
          • Reduce water evaporation from soil.
          • Limit leaching of nutrients & fertilizers.
          • Improves soil porosity & aeration that stimulates plant growth.
          • Non toxic, environmentally friendly & biodegradable.
Polymer Innovations Water$ave HY Hydro is highly effective in the young regrowth of trees, shrubs, bushes & saplings to assist in revegetation & reforestation.

          Water$ave HY application information:
          • 1 to 2 kg of fine textured Water$ave HY per cubic metre of water along with mulching materials, fixing agents, seeds & fertilizers.
          • Depending upon water retention desired, soil retention desired, soil type and salt content of the water, one hectare of hydro seed will only require 10-20kg of polymer.
          • Water$ave HY must be added last to the hydro seeder tank after the other components.
          • Stir at least 15 minutes before spreading.
          • Water$ave HY is available in easy to use 20kg pails.
Water$ave HY will reduce the time it takes the native vegetation to reclaim it's environment.

Polymer Innovations sales & support staff will tailor the best solution for your hydroseeding, hydromulching, hydrosprigging & other young regrowth concerns.

Polymer Solutions For Coal Mine Pollution

Coal mines have been in the news a little more than usual of late & it has not been all good news. Serious questions have arisen globally about coal industries especially concerning duty of care towards it workers & the quality of life for those that live nearby. Who are quite often the families, friends & workers of supporting industries of these coal mines.

Recently the US government has announced that will be increasing restrictions on businesses that pollute water affected by mountaintop removal mining. This involves exploding coal seams from the side of mountains which eventually sends very hazardous & often radioactive toxins such as lead, arsenic & selenium into nearby rivers & streams.

This was somewhat in response to a disaster on December 22nd 2008 at the TVA Kingston's coal fired power plant in Tennessee which created the worlds largest coal sludge disaster. Over a billion gallons of this coal sludge destroyed nearby homes, lands & rivers.

          From CNN:
"The sludge, a byproduct of the ash from coal combustion, was contained at a retention site at the Tennessee Valley Authority's power plant in Kingston, about 40 miles west of Knoxville.
The retention wall breached early Monday, sending the sludge downhill and damaging 15 homes. All the residents were evacuated, & three homes were deemed uninhabitable, according to the TVA."

Meanwhile in China coal mining is the deadliest occupation where thousands of people die annually either directly from pit disasters or indirectly from airborne pollution from coal mines or coal fired power stations.
The latest tragedy occurred in the northern China province of Shanxi only a month ago.

          From NY Times:
"Investigators blamed the usual culprit in China’s regular mine accidents: a lack of safety precautions. For days before the mine flooded, managers ignored water leaks that presaged trouble, according to preliminary findings by the State Administration of Work Safety. Miners had been ordered to step up the pace of construction to meet an October deadline to begin production at the mine, the agency said.
Of the 261 miners underground that day, 108 made it to safety. The rest were trapped & feared dead.

However, the most recent mining tragedy is currently being uncovered on our turf in Australia's Hunter Valley. This tragedy is far less obvious but potentially just as deadly in the long term.

For the past twenty years the Hunter Valley has seen more & more mines being approved many of them open cut coal mining that readily creates airborne pollution across nearby areas.

Below: Satellite photo of the Hunter Valley. The grey areas are mines.

On 12th of April Singleton became embroiled in a 'cancer cluster' story that was aired by he ABC's 4 Corners program that links a predominance of cancer, asthma & allergies in the area to the large amounts of coal dust that comes from local mines & power stations.

A link to this story including a full version of the program & many more details can be found here: http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2010/s2867659.htm

          From ABC News:
"People who live in Singleton and Muswellbrook and the towns in between have told Four Corners that the pollution coming out of nearby mines and power stations is making them sick with cancer and asthma.
Local GP Tuan Au tested 900 local school children and found one in six students had a lower lung function. The national average for asthma is one in nine.
His report was dismissed by New South Wales Health Minister Carmel Tebbutt.
Dr Au says that is not good enough and he has called for more to be done.
"What I'm going to do, is do it again until the Government will listen to it, and I will let the history be the judge," he said. "If we ignore the problems and we do nothing about it's the same as murder."

          One month later:

"Fears of high rates of childhood asthma in the resource rich Hunter/New England Region have been confirmed in the New South Wales Government's new child health report.
The report found nearly 40 per cent of 9 to 15-years-olds in the region had suffered from asthma at some stage. That is 17 per cent more than the central coast. The region also has the highest asthma rate for children under eight, with just over a quarter needing treatment.
There have been ongoing calls for a comprehensive health study in the Upper Hunter, due to concerns about asthma being linked to the coal and power sectors.
Health officials have previously acknowledged above-average levels of asthma and respiratory problems in the area."

Polymer Innovations is located at Singleton in the heart & lungs of the Hunter Valley.
We feel it is our duty to maintain our commitment to offering local, national & global mines products that can solve or at least abate these coal mine pollution problems.

There are 3 specific Polymer Innovation products that assist in controlling coal mine pollution.

          1. Polymer Innovations SAP HPF (High Performance Fines) & HD (Heavy Duty)
absorbs large quantities of water present in mining, construction, roadways & other water affected areas.
Muddy water that is too thick to pump or too watery to shovel up, can be thickened or solidified quickly by adding SAP HD & HPF allowing for fast & easy removal.

In mining SAP HPF & HD is designed for critical applications where production is affected by water based slurries. Recovered waste can be transported to the surface on conveyors without extended periods of downtime or reduction in productivity.

SAP HPF contains smaller polymers for quick, targeted removals of water ingress.
SAP HD is generally more suited for larger scale instances of sludge to be removed.
However varying conditions occur all the time & the correct SAP for each customer is determined on a case by case basis.
Much more information on our SAP Products can be found in a previous blog post Super Absorbent Polymers SAP HD & HPF.
