Polymer Innovations In Road Stabilisation

Polymer Innovations works closely with industries especially to help them maintain safe working environments that assist with the health & safety of workers, their families & local residents. Many of these heavy industries such as mining & construction are located in remote locations & utilise dirt or unsealed private & public roads constantly.

Treated Road In A Hunter Valley Mine
Due to the huge amounts of stress these roads regularly receive they soon lose stability & erode. Spilling & leaching toxic dirt, mud & water pollution into nearby land & waterways affects employees, residents & the local environment.

Road stabilisation is important in maintaining our landscapes integrity by stopping the leaching of water based & airborne pollution, preventing hard panning & increased salt content of soils, protect native land & increase the strength of roads & embankments.

Road stabilisation, soil erosion & dust pollution problems are dealt with quickly by Polymer Innovations specific polymer products. That are easy to apply, cost effective, biodegradable, non-toxic & environmentally friendly.

Water$ave Flobind is a lineal polymer that is used for soil erosion control, road stablisation, dust suppression, dam sealing & hydroseeding. Flobind is a lineal polymer in powdered form that instead of forming a gel as most of our polymers do, Flobind turns into a slime.

Water$ave Flobind is extremely versatile & can assist with all water & pollution issues. It flocculates suspended fine soil particles & stabilises existing soil structure. Flobind is also ideal for smaller applications where powder or emulsion dosing systems are not practical.

This polymer gives us an even greater ability to customise a solution for your water & pollution problems. Whether it is used on its own or mixed with other blends our ability to cater a solution for you is assured.

Suppressing dust & light soil in the air is important in many ways. Such as keeping people & animals free from allergies & asthma, reducing soil erosion, ecological damage & airborne pollution. Also, reducing wear & tear on nearby expensive equipment.

Finding ways to effectively control it in a simple & cost effective manner is beneficial for everyone. Polymer Innovations meets this demand with a specific & extremely cost effective polymer blend for dust pollution control Water$ave DS Dust Suppression. Local coal mines in the Hunter Valley with serious dust concerns use Water$ave DS Dust Suppression on a regular basis.

Before W$DS & ....After W$DS
Water$ave Dust Suppression is an effective dust stabilising agent for soil waste & mineral dumps; civil & commercial construction sites; open cut & underground mines; coal stock pile management; quarries & landfills; unpaved roads; parking lots & open areas; dirt roads; airstrips & other dust prone areas.

Water$ave DS offers a quick, safe & cost effective solution that reduces the amount & the frequency of cart watering. No matter the scale Polymer Innovations staff will provide the best dust suppressant solution to keep your environment clear & it's inhabitants breathing easier.

Polymer Innovations develops specific polymer blends that address the unique requirements of industries exposed to hazardous or toxic slimes & sludges. Our SAP Range (Super Absorbent Polymers) absorb large quantities of toxins in water & hold them stable for removal for mining, construction & governments roadways; dredging & other industrial waste water affected areas.

Toxic water ingress issues are dealt with quickly by our SAP polymer blends. SAP reduces damage to the surrounding environment & removes hazardous material from the work area that can be caused by toxic water & mud slurries. This ability to cater to the unique requirements of our clients allows us to control toxic water based pollution from some of Australia's most pristine environments & productive industries.

SAP Testing
Depending on the type of polymer used & it's blend ratio; the toxic sludge can retain a certain amount of moisture when the water is absorbed holding the slurry or slime stable. This is important to keep the integrity of the mixture so it holds together while it is being handled & moved.

Polymer Innovations are specialists in striking the perfect balance of sludge & moisture required to reduce the weight added by the polymer while maintaining it's structural integrity. Toxic water slurries that are too thick to pump or too watery to shovel up, can be thickened quickly by adding SAP HD & HPF allowing for fast & easy removal.

Hydroseeding is used to seed grass on commercial sites, highways or motorways, parks & golf courses, heavily damaged or burnt land, lawns & areas too large, inaccessible or unsuitable for conventional methods. Once it is applied to the soil, it enhances growth by providing an ideal environment for seed germination.

Water$ave HY Hydro can be efficiently applied for hydroseeding operations in mountainous areas or road embankments. Maximising plant establishment & holds the components together preventing loss of material through wind & water erosion.

Water$ave HY Hydro prevents cellulose mulch from becoming hardpan during a dry spell. The mulch remains aerated allowing the seeds to sprout quickly. Water$ave HY also reduces the amount of mulch needed. Polymer Innovations Water$ave HY Hydro is highly effective in the young regrowth of trees, shrubs, bushes & saplings to assist in revegetation & reforestation.
Deforestation of native vegetation creates many problems such as soil erosion or air pollution. Ecological destruction effects all animal & plant species which then contributes to disease, food shortages & an imbalance in ecosystems that we share.

W$PT Perfect For Native Saplings
Polymer Innovations Water$avePT Plantation is effective in the revegetation & reforestation of roadside trees, bushes, tube stock & saplings.

Water$ave PT reduces the mortality rate caused by transplant shock & also enhances root development, encouraging more rapid growth & production.

Water$ave PT reduces the leaching of any introduced fertilizer, minimising evaporation from the soil whilst improving porosity & aeration. It is a specific blend of anionic cross-linked & lineal polymers that can be added either in wet hydrated or dry form to the planting hole.

Benefits to industries & individuals that use our unique polymer blends:

  • Easy & safe to handle.
  • Protect the environment against drought & groundwater pollution.
  • Rapidly dissolves in water without gel blocking.
  • Same methods no matter the scale.

Polymer Innovations In Odour Suppression Part 2

Application & Polymers
Last month, in 'Polymer Innovations In Odour Suppression Part 1' we informed you of a housing development in Rutherford that has been experiencing a very foul situation in the form of not one but two giant mounds of chicken manure!!

This month in 'Polymer Innovations In Odour Suppression Part 2' we look at the application methods & polymers used to treat this Chicken 'Manure-luru'!

Mound #1 (Foreground)
& Mound #2 (Background)
After an inspection of the site & samples taken for analysis & testing the goals of the project were soon established:

The Goals of the project:
  1. Remove Odour.
  2. Remove Runoff.
  3. Remove Fly Activity.
  4. Stabilise Mound.
  5. Reduce Combustibility.
After a week of different tests a perfect application method & polymer solutions had been formulated.

Application Method Overview:
  1. Mound #1 was treated with more polymer solution than Mound #2 in both liquid & dry applications.
  2. First application was a liquid polymer solution containing Water$ave Flobind. This was applied via hose & water cart.
  3. The second application was a dry polymer solution of SAP HPF P4 applied by hand.
  4. Third application was another application of the liquid polymer solution again containing Water$ave Flobind.
  5. These applications were done in one day by Dale & Sebastion before there was expected rainfall later that week.
  6. Although Mound #2 was treated with less polymer solution. It was deemed just as successful as Mound #1.
These mounds attracted a huge mount of flies that sat like a haze over the top of the two mounds creating an unsanitary environment creating more odour & undermining it's structural integrity.
Mound #1 After Applications
Within hours, the offending chicken manure odour was gone, fly activity was removed completely from both mounds & the subsequent future odour from this activity was therefore also erradicated.

Due to the polymer activity of the the applications, any subsequent rainfall is absorbed into the polymer 'cap' removing all runoff to nearby water courses & groundwater. In doing so, any possibility of spontaneous combustion was also greatly reduced.

These two mounds have now been removed & the manure has been spread around as fertiliser in sorrounding areas in Rutherford.

The nearby community were extremely pleased with the results of our quick work in treating this problem.

We believe these efforts to assist a local problem have created ourselves a new niche market in greentech polymers for the treatment of odour pollution.

Polymer Innovations In Odour Suppression Part 1

Introduction & Testing
Polymer Innovations is not just a name it is a philosophy. A 'mission statement' as well as a title.

'Manure-luru'
Sometimes these innovations with our polymers come from all sources of inspiration.

Recently, a nearby housing development in Rutherford has been experiencing a very foul situation in the form of not one but two giant mounds of chicken manure!!

We were approached by representatives of nearby residents who constantly experience wafts of offensive manure odour across their nearby neighbourhoods.
These mounds constantly hamper the enjoyment of their new dwellings... not to mention being an embarrassing & dangerous nuisance.

Amazingly, these mounds have been recklessly placed near a water course!

An inspection of the site was soon carried out & samples taken for analysis & testing.

These mounds attract a huge mount of flies that sit like a haze over the top creating an unsanitary environment creating more odour & undermining it's structural integrity.

Samples taken from
the site for testing.
Maintaining structural integrity is important.
The polymer must 'cap' the manure. Removing it's smell & any runoff during rainfall.
Spontaneous combustion has also been identified as a potential threat.

The goals of the project:
  1. Remove Odour.
  2. Remove Runoff.
  3. Remove Fly Activity.
  4. Stabilise Mound.
  5. Reduce Combustibility.
Below is a short video overview of one test being conducted.
In this example we are trialling different levels of liquid anionic polymer & some super absorbent polymer powder applications against the effects of exposure, heat, water, wind & time.

After a week of different tests a perfect polymer solution had been formulated.

These solutions removed all odour & fly activity, increased it's structural integrity via water application & mitigated any possibility of combustion.

Polymer Innovations To Help Detox Sydney Harbour

Australia's Sydney Harbour is arguably the most beautiful harbour in the world but lurking beneath it's shiny blue surface is a very dark & toxic secret indeed.

In January 2006, NSW Health surprised many Sydneysiders when they issued an advisory telling people not to consume seafood caught from Sydney Harbour due to high levels of Dioxin found in marine life living in Port Jackson estuaries & harbour.

As a result commercial fishing in Sydney Harbour was banned in February 2006.
Some fisherman were concerned about their own Dioxin levels so testing of Serum Dioxin levels was offered to commercial fishers & their families.
It was found that Serum Dioxin levels in these fisherman were higher than Australian background levels, but comparable with other international high fish-eating communities.

Recreational fishing is still allowed but only a certain amount of seafood can be consumed.
As a precautionary measure people are advised to eat only one 150gm serve of fish caught from Sydney Harbour per month. This quantity is based on a 70kg adult.

Dioxins are a group of chlorinated chemicals that originate from industrial pollution or are generated in natural processes such as bush fires. Dioxins are chemically stable & stay in the environment for a long time which accumulate in the body fat of animals & humans.

Now in 2010 levels are higher & the mud that sits at the bottom of this harbour has transformed into an anoxic (no oxygen present) sludge that has killed off 40% of the harbour's invertebrates!

This lifeless sludge contains high levels of organochlorine pesticides like DDT, heavy metals like lead & the highest concentrations of toxic hydrocarbons to be found anywhere in the country.

The industrial dumping of toxins has been banned for decades but these toxic hydrocarbons still enter the harbour via Sydney's storm water system into it's estuaries that continuously move these toxic clusters about the harbour.

Hydrocarbons are an organic compound consisting entirely of hydrogen & carbon. A common example of a hydrocarbon is crude oil. So this sludge is like toxic crude oil!

In June, the ABC's Catalyst program ran a very informative story regarding these toxic sediment concerns in Sydney harbour.
This program can be viewed here: http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/2917562.htm

Polymer Innovations was approached about this problem in the harbour & were asked to make a submission to the contractors working for the NSW government with a number of other competing firms.

Depending on the type of polymer used & it's blend ratio; the toxic sludge will still retain a certain amount of moisture turning from a glossy consistency to a a matte consistency when the water is absorbed & held stable.

This is important to keep the integrity of the mixture so it holds together while it is being handled & moved.
The perfect balance of sludge & moisture is required to reduce the weight added by the polymer while maintaining it's structural integrity.

The above photo stream shows some tests & initial application of these experimental SAP blends.

There are a number of parameters that this unique reclamation project presented:
  • All work is to be done offshore.
  • Suitable for long haul transportation to Queensland.
  • Eliminate double handling of sludge.
  • Minimisation of active ingredient to reduce weight & costs.
  • Reduce heavy machinery use.
These parameters were addressed by our new unique SAP blend:
  • The polymer is packaged & applied easily in 500kg - 1000kg bulk bags. So it can be mechanically added to the sludge in any location or conditions.
  • When applying the polymer at the correct blend ratio, the sludge will hold firm enough to 'stand' for long haul transportation to Queensland.
  • Once the polymer is applied to the sludge it can be loaded directly to awaiting transportation if required.
  • This polymer has reduced the active ingredient down to 2.5% of the load. Current methods & those of our competitors add 50% to the load! It is estimated that this will reduce weight & costs by at least 50%.
  • Due to the increased structural integrity of the sludge, lighter or more specific machinery can be used. In fact it can be loaded manually ie. spadable.

Utilising a SAP:
  • Reduces hazardous spillage, CO2 & pollution emissions,
  • Reduces man hours, extra handling activity & traffic on roads.
  • Improves safety & efficiency for the dredging contractors.
  • Direct improvements to the environment of Sydney Harbour's wildlife & it's citizens.

Recently, Polymer Innovations developed a specific new blend of super absorbent polymer based on our HPF blend to tackle large amounts of watery toxic sludge from local mines in the Hunter.

This new blend named 'P4' was trialled by us along with other blends to come up with the best solution for extracting, loading & transporting this toxic sludge from Sydney harbour.

Polymer Innovations SAP HPF P4 contains very small polymers for an accurate application to the targeted area, for a more effective removal of water affected slimes & slurries.
HPF P4 is particularly well suited for dredging work.

Polymer Innovations sales & support staff will tailor the best solution for the removal of dangerous mud, slimes, slurry or sludge.

Polymer Solutions For Coal Mine Pollution

Coal mines have been in the news a little more than usual of late & it has not been all good news. Serious questions have arisen globally about coal industries especially concerning duty of care towards it workers & the quality of life for those that live nearby. Who are quite often the families, friends & workers of supporting industries of these coal mines.

Recently the US government has announced that will be increasing restrictions on businesses that pollute water affected by mountaintop removal mining. This involves exploding coal seams from the side of mountains which eventually sends very hazardous & often radioactive toxins such as lead, arsenic & selenium into nearby rivers & streams.

This was somewhat in response to a disaster on December 22nd 2008 at the TVA Kingston's coal fired power plant in Tennessee which created the worlds largest coal sludge disaster. Over a billion gallons of this coal sludge destroyed nearby homes, lands & rivers.

From CNN:
"The sludge, a byproduct of the ash from coal combustion, was contained at a retention site at the Tennessee Valley Authority's power plant in Kingston, about 40 miles west of Knoxville.
The retention wall breached early Monday, sending the sludge downhill and damaging 15 homes. All the residents were evacuated, & three homes were deemed uninhabitable, according to the TVA."

Meanwhile in China coal mining is the deadliest occupation where thousands of people die annually either directly from pit disasters or indirectly from airborne pollution from coal mines or coal fired power stations.
The latest tragedy occurred in the northern China province of Shanxi only a month ago.

From NY Times:
"Investigators blamed the usual culprit in China’s regular mine accidents: a lack of safety precautions. For days before the mine flooded, managers ignored water leaks that presaged trouble, according to preliminary findings by the State Administration of Work Safety. Miners had been ordered to step up the pace of construction to meet an October deadline to begin production at the mine, the agency said.
Of the 261 miners underground that day, 108 made it to safety. The rest were trapped & feared dead.

However, the most recent mining tragedy is currently being uncovered on our turf in Australia's Hunter Valley. This tragedy is far less obvious but potentially just as deadly in the long term.

For the past twenty years the Hunter Valley has seen more & more mines being approved many of them open cut coal mining that readily creates airborne pollution across nearby areas.

Below: Satellite photo of the Hunter Valley. The grey areas are mines.

On 12th of April Singleton became embroiled in a 'cancer cluster' story that was aired by he ABC's 4 Corners program that links a predominance of cancer, asthma & allergies in the area to the large amounts of coal dust that comes from local mines & power stations.

A link to this story including a full version of the program & many more details can be found here: http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/content/2010/s2867659.htm

From ABC News:
"People who live in Singleton and Muswellbrook and the towns in between have told Four Corners that the pollution coming out of nearby mines and power stations is making them sick with cancer and asthma.
Local GP Tuan Au tested 900 local school children and found one in six students had a lower lung function. The national average for asthma is one in nine.
His report was dismissed by New South Wales Health Minister Carmel Tebbutt.
Dr Au says that is not good enough and he has called for more to be done.
"What I'm going to do, is do it again until the Government will listen to it, and I will let the history be the judge," he said. "If we ignore the problems and we do nothing about it's the same as murder."

One month later:

"Fears of high rates of childhood asthma in the resource rich Hunter/New England Region have been confirmed in the New South Wales Government's new child health report.
The report found nearly 40 per cent of 9 to 15-years-olds in the region had suffered from asthma at some stage. That is 17 per cent more than the central coast. The region also has the highest asthma rate for children under eight, with just over a quarter needing treatment.
There have been ongoing calls for a comprehensive health study in the Upper Hunter, due to concerns about asthma being linked to the coal and power sectors.
Health officials have previously acknowledged above-average levels of asthma and respiratory problems in the area."

Polymer Innovations is located at Singleton in the heart & lungs of the Hunter Valley.
We feel it is our duty to maintain our commitment to offering local, national & global mines products that can solve or at least abate these coal mine pollution problems.

Water$ave PT Plantation

Deforestation of the landscape can occur naturally from perhaps floods or fire but as we know on most occasions it is man made via land clearing for housing, industry or roads.

This deforestation of native vegetation creates many new problems, such as soil erosion or air pollution.
Ecology destruction effects both animal & plant species that can then contribute to disease, food shortages & a general imbalance in all ecosystems that we share.

Deforestation reduces the planets capacity to convert Carbon Dioxide to Oxygen which many say is a major contributor to global warming.

Deforestation causes a myriad of problems for us all now & long into the future.
It is always in our best interest to give back as much as we take.

Many of these ecosystems never fully recover to their original state such as rainforests & in ecosystems that can it takes at least a generation or two before we see any real recovery for plants, animals & us to flourish.

Land clearing increases the occurrence & severity of water evaporation, this in turn contributes to soil salinity & drought.
It also increases nutrient leeching & therefore groundwater pollution not to mention erosion & flooding, further exacerbating the problem.

It decreases biodiversity which leads to the proliferation of some species that prosper such as locusts & the reduction of necessary species such as birds or worms.
Soil aeration is also reduced which in turn again decreases soil fertility & soil stability.

If there is a way to assist this recovery & increase the rate of regrowth then we should utilize it wherever possible.

In Australia's history since white settlement especially there has been a lot of land clearing for farming, grazing, urban development & road construction.

As we have discovered the error of our ways we have over recent decades started to turn that trend around with revegetation & reforestation increasing from the good work of organisations such as Landcare, farmers, graziers & land owners across the country.

There is however a long way to go to reverse these potentially devastating activities.
The graph above illustrates the beginning of this turn around.
A full report from 2006 can be found here.

Polymer Innovations Water$ave PT Plantation is highly effective in the replanting of trees, bushes & saplings to assist in revegetation & reforestation.

Water$ave PT makes it possible to reduce the mortality rate of plants from transplant shock.
It enhances the root development of the plant which therefore brings about more rapid growth & production reducing the time it takes to regrow the affected area.

Water$ave PT Plantation main benefits:
  • Enhance plant growth & survival.
  • Increase the water holding capacity of soils.
  • Reduce watering frequency by up to 50%.
  • Protect the environment against drought & groundwater pollution.
  • Improve physical properties of compact soil.
  • Reduce water evaporation from soil.
  • Limit leaching of nutrients & fertilizers.
  • Improve soil porosity & aeration.
  • As with all Polymer Innovations products it is non toxic, environmentally friendly & biodegradable.
Water$ave PT can potentially reduce the time it takes the native vegetation to reclaim it's environment.

Watersave PT application information:
  • Add 6g of Water$ave PT per tree planting.
  • The polymer must be evenly mixed into the excavated soil.
  • Place the root ball of the plant at the bottom of the hole and fill in the hole with the treated soil.
  • Make sure that Water$ave is distributed evenly around the roots.
  • Then cover the surface with 5cm of untreated soil to prevent degradation of the polymer by UV rays & stagnation of water on the surface.
